Have you ever read a book because you wanted to be nice to someone? Something a bit different, or a genre you don’t really like? Then walk away completely and totally ecstatic that you did? The Third Fate was like that for me. I had read this book, because Nadja had asked me to. I figured what the heck.. I am not a fan of “pure” Vampire stories and consequently I steer clear of them when I read Vampire.. I know, there are many series that are considered Vampire and yet, aren’t.. or they have a twist.. The Third Fate stayed closer to the Vampire concept and yet it strayed, just enough to catch my attention and better yet, keep it.
Cael McInnis was one moody Vampire, an ancient that was fed up with the same old same old. He was missing something in his life, just not sure what it was. He wasn’t happy with Vampire politics and had willingly walked away from a position of power.. He wasn’t looking for love but he wouldn’t turn it down either.. I wouldn’t say he was in that state that only a true Vampire could obtain, true ennui, what he was, was bored... But one evening that all changed. There was a scent, something that touched him, called to him and he was intrigued, curious, determined to figure it out and with his curiosity he met Paige... upon meeting Paige he was forever lost.
Paige Kinnell, adopted by her aunt, raised as a sibling to her twin cousins just 5 months older. Paige was the quiet one in the group.. While her crazy cousins love a good night out, Paige would prefer a quiet night in. She has a serious love of books and is devoted to her job.. the thing is she has started having these dreams... and boy are they good.. Before long she meets the man who fulfils those dreams, who is those dreams. She stumbles into love, a quiet sweet love.. oh yeah except... Poor Paige has no idea who or what she is and it falls upon Cael to not only tell her but to keep her safe from those who want to destroy her.
This story sometimes stumbled in its transitions but the story itself was wonderful. Paige had to learn to love and to trust in love, all the while having to accept who and what she was.. Not only was she a Vampire about to awaken but she her fate had been played with, bargained for and changed.. giving her the power of the Third Fate. Ms Notarani does a wonderful job at including myths and legends into her story and making them believable. Her reasons and explanations for what a Druid is and how they came to be was exceptional. Her use of those pesky Fates was spectacular. Yes I know enough of the superlatives. It wasn’t a perfect read, there was too much going on with the secondary characters, characters I would have enjoyed seeing get their own stories. Although, we are left with some questions about a few of the characters so I am hoping we will see more of this world. The best thing I can say about this book is: right after I read this book, I was reading another Vampire story and kept wondering where Cael and Paige were.. what happened to them and when would they show up again. It was quite embarrassing when I realized that it was a totally different, book, author, story.. yeah I know. But Cael and Paige managed to escape the confines of their book and make themselves heard in another. That is good storytelling. They stayed on my mind, they stayed with me. A nifty trick that.
Ms Notarani needs to hone her craft a bit but the talent is there, the story is strong and the characters incredibly enjoyable. I would most definitely suggest you take a look at this book
