World Building, Who Needs It?

As many of you know we at BR are HUGE PNR and Fantasy Fans.. If you didn't know our blog title may have given it away.. to that end I have decided to write a series on World Building.. look for my thoughts every Friday for the next couple of weeks.. Be sure and leave your comments and let me know what you think.

I want to discuss many factors of world building..

  1. How the groundbreaking PNR authors such as Kenyon and Feehan initially worked with world building and how they segued into the newer style
  2. How the new Authors are able to world build
  3. What the learned from the ground breakers
  4. How publishers treated PNR and world building
  5. The "Rules" of world building..
Please let me know if there are any questions or topics you would like to see covered in this series..

WWW Wednesday

Wednesday is here again and there are a few questions that have been pulling at me this week. With the dawn of e-readers more and more people are buying them. My grandparents own them! And they don't even have a debit card!  So here are my questions....

Will e-readers replace paperback and hardback books?

Which do you perfer, a tangible book or an e-book?

What are e-books offering to the literary world?

Why not buy both?

This is the question that I have heard the most debated. Are books on the brink of extinction because of the evolution of electronic books? Well maybe. I mean people used to write on walls because there was no paper, they used what they had. Now I can not tell you when the last time I wrote anything on a wall to remember something, I mean my kids do it every once and awhile but...well thank God for the magic eraser. Do I think that one day they will stop printing books? No, but I do think that maybe one day paperback and hardback books will be a luxury item and not a commonplace item that we could pick up at the grocery store. I do however believe that it is a long way away.

I have a nook and I LOVE it! It is one of the best things that I have ever bought! But,  I do still buy tangible books. All the time. Sometimes the books are books that I want for display and sometimes they are books that are not offered in an e-format. And sometimes I just buy them because I want to. I think that there are times that I just get tired of looking at my nook screen and I NEED to read a regular book. There is nothing like curling up on my couch and reading a good book. The nook offers me a free hand though so it is great for when my kids want to watch a movie and sit in my lap. I can read easily and don't have to watch Hop  for the one millionth time. So I guess it just depends on my mood.

I have noticed that there are some authors who have their books ONLY in e-books. There publishers won't release it in paperback until they reach x amount of money in sales. So this is letting people get their work out there who would have never gotten a chance before. And I think that is great! Plus I have noticed that some authors will offer the first book in their series for free so people will give it a chance! I can not tell you how many books I have read for free and then become hooked to their series, I believe that this is a genius move!

I don't usually buy both copies because the ebooks are only a few dollars less than the paperbacks! Or they are the same price! I wish that they would release books the same way they do DVD's. DVD's are offering a combo pack that has a digital copy of the movie with it for only a few dollars more than just the stand alone movie. So say that they do the same with books??? Sell the paperback for.... 11 dollars and have the cashier give you a code when you buy the book! Then you go home and enter the code into your e-reader or the website of the place you buy your ebooks from! Then it is sent to your e-reader. Done! Then people are still buying books and ebooks. There are so many series that I would take advantage of is they offered this as an option.

Have a great day!

Key of Valor, A Review

Both keys have been found. The time draws near. The fate of three half mortal women is in the hands of one woman. Can she solve the riddle and save these people in time?

Key of Valor is the third and final chapter to the Key trilogy by Nora Roberts. In the past two months Zoe has watched things happen that she never would have thought would be possible. At first, the idea of going on an adventure and trying to solve a mystery seemed fun and exciting. Now after watching her new friends risking their lives to find the keys Zoe is having reservations. She has a child to think of. And a new business to start up. If there is one thing that Zoe McCourt isn't it's a coward. She knows that all of the things that her new family have been through will have been for nothing if she doesn't stop dragging her feet find this key.

Bradly Vane IV has been in love with Zoe McCourt from the moment he found a painting that had her face on it. Only when he bought the painting he had never even heard of her. He just knew that the woman in that painting called to him. When he learned that she was real Brad knew that she was the one meant for him. When it comes to Zoe Brad is all thumbs. He is always doing something to make her mad even if it is something as simple as giving her a ride when her car breaks down.

Zoe is determined to keep Brad as far away from her as possible but Brad is determined for them to be together. He knows that their is nothing in this world that is going to keep her away from him. When Brad learned that Zoe had a son, you can imagine his relief to find that Zoe isn't married. Who thinks like that? Brad can't help it though. He knows that they have a destiny and Simon, Zoe's son, is one hell of an extra bonus. Brad fell just as hard for Simon as he did for Zoe, how could he not? That kid is something amazing. Brad will do anything to get the family that he knows is his.

With the rules of crossing through the veil broken by Kane, Zoe fears for her son and for the goddesses more than ever. To her relief she is promised that no harm is to come to Simon no matter the cost of breaking said rules. Zoe's story touched me unlike all the others. She raised her child all on her own when she was just a young teenager. The life that she came from was nothing short of a nightmare and for her to be the mother and woman she is today is really amazing.

One month. One month to find herself and the key. One month to save three women that she has never met but feels close to nonetheless. One month to trust herself and let go of the past. One month to find the Key of Valor in herself.

Key of Valor is my favorite book in this trilogy. To watch Zoe and Brad and Simon become a family is simply beautiful. To learn how many times Brads and Zoe's lives crossed paths without them even knowing it gave me goosebumps. Roberts does not disappoint with this final chapter in this series. The action is nonstop as well as the humor. This is a wonderfully written sweet story with the best ending. You will not be disappointed. A Must Read Indeed!

Happy Reading!

Sex Sells, Doesn't It?

It seems to me that with the onslaught of erotica we are seeing more and more sex in our novels. There are times when we find books that are thinly veiled sex books with just a tad of a story in it. These are washed out excuses for a story and we all know they are about the sex.. not about the story. It's like calling a porn movie a romance story.. Then there are those books that walk that line..they tread it so deliciously, so delicately that we practically inhale them.. Brilliant writing with wonderful characters and a fantastic storyline.. adding that erotically sensual touch and completely spellbinding us.

BUT... there are those books that use sex as part of the story and it just doesn't fit. It doesn't belong and often it ruins the story. Recently I read a series whose stories really caught my attention. Wonderfully written characters, they were compelling and intriguing and oh so interesting. They had lives, rich histories, family connections. I seriously liked these characters and yet once they started having sex, I lost it. There was absolutely NO Chemistry. These intelligent articulate characters spewed filth during their love scenes. The creative and unique descriptive writing was lost and suddenly the book would fall apart. It wasn't that they didn't require a sex scene. Shoot the first book in the series was about a couple that met and had a one night stand.. then fell in love. Obviously they needed a sex scene or two.. but the writer lost me whenever she started on these scenes.

The third book was wonderful, brought me to tears. I felt the heroine's pain, I connected with her. I empathized with her needs and her strengths.. I totally lusted after the hero. This book should have been brilliant.. and yet.. as soon as they hit the sack.. eh.. rude, crude and totally lacking.

I don't get it.. Yes sex sells.. I understand this. I understand the marketing of sex. I understand that to find a novel without sex in it is almost unimaginable but seriously.. I would rather see the sex implied then see it ruin a really excellent book. I guess in my mind.. sex doesn't always sell. Sometimes the magic of love, the sensual delight, the tease is all I need.

Talking About. . . The Men of True Blood

I can not believe that it is Thursday again! The weeks are flying by. While I was trying to think of who to talk about this week, Shauni said, " The Men of Summer" , I had no clue that meant baseball but it did get me thinking of some men that summer has been bringing us for the past few years. Summer, to me, means the men of Bon Temps.

So this week I give you....

The Men of True Blood!

In 2008 HBO debuted the first episode of True Blood. A supernatural show based off the Sookie Stackhouse book series by Charlaine Harris. The main character, Sookie, can read minds and finds herself quickly knee deep in the supernatural. The men that come and go through Sookie's life is hard to keep up with. But let's see if we can try :)

He plays the role of Eric Northman

Joe Manganiello
Born:     Joesph Micheal Manganiello

It is said that each season of this show is loosely based on a book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I have heard from readers that it is not anywhere close to the books. At least we have these men to get us through the summer! I hope you had fun. You know what is coming next!

Just for fun!

WWW Wednesday

Well, it is Wednesday again and there are a few questions that I have been thinking about nonstop lately. When authors write a book, is there a method to their madness? Do the characters really dictate how a story is going to unfold? So here it is....

Why Do They Do It?

Why do they keep writing a series that should have ended three books back?

Why do they love to torture their characters to such extremes?

Was this the plan from the very beginning?

Why do they put so much time into recapping?

Why oh why must the characters names be impossible to pronounce?

*I can not even tell you how many series' I have given up on because I just lost interest in it. The first, say, 6 books were really good. Then the series just takes a dive. How many times can a town be overrun by evil vampires? Why do people still live in that dumb town? I feel like maybe sometimes leaving while hot is better than just staying because you can.

*I am all for a tortured soul. I even love it most of the time. It makes the characters more real and more human. It just seems like lately the tortured soul is taken to the next level. To things that I just have freaking nightmares about. I feel like sometimes it is just there for a shock value and not for the sake of the character psyche that is needed.

*I know that authors say that they had it planned from the very beginning but, really??? Sometimes to me it just seems like happy accidents that it happened. Most of the time I am okay with the way it happens. It is just so much story that it amazes me that authors can tie everything in together. If this is indeed true, I think that it is the mark of a great writer. To know how everything is going to end before you have even written the series, it just blows me away

*Most of the books I read are a series so I am a victim of recapping. I hate it! I know that is is important in case it has been a while since you read the last book or if you are reading out of order. But I feel like sometimes authors don't give their readers enough credit to figure things out to be able to follow along with the story. I do not need a two page recap of the past books. Ever. I spend a lot of time skipping around because of recapping. I just think that those are important pages that could be used for the story I am reading NOW. You know?

*I just feel dumb sometimes reading all of these names. I need a dictionary just for names of characters and pronunciations. Why oh why can there not be more Bob's? Or Janes? I just hate that I don't know how to pronounce most of the names I read and my brain makes up crazy pronunciations. It is actually quite comical.

Have a great Wednesday!

The Golden Lily, A Review

The Golden Lily is the second book in the Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead.

After being considered a traitor to her people for aiding Rose Hathaway, Sydney Sage has finally cleared her name and reputation in the Alchemist Community. All she had to do was uncover an illegal ring of people using vampire blood to help kids enhance their abilities in sports and, oh yeah, a rouge vampire trying to become Strigoi. All of this was accomplished while helping the sister of the Moroi Queen stay in hiding at a human boarding school. All in a days work.

Adrian and Dimitri (swoon to both of those men! ) with the help of Sonya Karp, are trying to find some way to help protect humans and vampires from Strigoi attacks ( the vampires that we have come to know from myth with no thoughts of anything but murder and mayhem). Sydney feels the need to help them in whatever way she can, after all they are trying to protect humans too. But when the question of using her blood as a sample is brought up, all of Sydney's beliefs are put to the test.

In between her moral dilemma of donating blood Trey, Sydney's friend, swears that he has found her soul mate in a coworker at the coffee shop he works at. Upon meeting Brayden, Sydney realizes that Trey might know what he is talking about. He is her intellectual match in every way. She could debate with him all day. That is all there is to the dating thing right? It is normal not to feel passion when you are talking about the effects of wind energy? Surely there are no sparks or tingling feelings when you touch someone in real life?

Sydney's "relationship" is the last thing that she has time for when one night, while picking up dinner downtown with Sonya, the women are attacked. By humans! The men meant to behead Sonya right there on the street. In that moment Sydney's entire world view is changed. She was attacked by her own kind and they were there to do her and her "friend" harm. All of her life she was afraid of the vampires. They are an abomination and not natural. All of them. The Moroi (vampire elites), the dhampir's ( the Moroi guardians) and the Strigoi (the evil undead ). Why had she never realized that all people are capable of evil deeds. Are Dimitri and Sonya really worse than the men who attacked her? Is Adrian?

Oh Adrian, Sydney really is spending too much of her time thinking of that vampire. She knows that it is because she is proud of him for going to school and taking art classes. Trying to be a better man all around. She is just a good person who likes to see people succeed. It has nothing to do with the way he looks at her or sticks up for her. Nothing to do with the wonderful way he smells, whoa! Did she just think that?

The hunt is on. Someone knows that there are Moroi in Palm Springs and they seem to be ready to stalk and kill at any cost. Sydney must figure out what is going on in time to help all of the people in her group that she has been protecting. Does someone know that the Moroi princess, Jill, is here? Are they targeting her along with Sonya? Why does this group that attacked her keep tugging at Sydney's memory? She should know what is going on but there are too many holes in this mystery. Can she solve it in time?

Oh my good Lord so many things happen in this book! I could not put it down! At all! As I kept getting closer to the end of the book I found myself wondering how Mead was going to tie up all the loose ends. Oh how she does it flawlessly. Not one single detail goes unnoticed. Sydney is such a wonderfully written character. I wish that I knew her in real life. In this book so many of Sydney's limits are challenged and she handles it with her typical grace. None at all! :)  I love this series and I can not wait for the next book. If you have not tried this series yet, go out and by the first book, Bloodlines, right now! You will be hooked, I promise you. This is A Must Read Indeed!

Happy Reading,

Lisa :)

Father's Day

Father's Day has always been a very special day for me. I was raised by a single father who faced every challenge I threw at him head on and with grace that still astounds me to this day. Because it was just me and my dad, two peas in a pod, for so long, I believe that we were able to form a bond that not everyone has the privilege to attain in a lifetime. Here are a few amazing things about my dad:

When I was eight I had long hair and it was a pain to deal with, my dad would go through an entire bottle of No More Tangles spray just to brush it out so I wouldn't be in any pain.

He would always get me the exact barbie or doll that I asked for for my birthday no matter what it was always there. And he would always play with them with me.

He would make everything we did into a game. Even something as mundane as putting our seat belts on. Everything was a race and I loved it.

When it was time for me to start wearing bras he sent me shopping with my grandma! Ahaha!  But he still made sure I got what I needed.

He never ever said a single bad thing about my mother, ever. He always made sure to tell me that she loved me and to respect her. He is kinda amazing like that.

He would always give me money even when I had a job and made my own money.

When I was first learning how to drive he would make me drive everywhere, even on the highway ( I am from Atlanta! ) He would just say, "well you got to learn sometime, why not now?"

He always says "You are responsible for your own feelings, no one else." I live by that.

He tells me he loves me everyday that I talk to him.

When I told him that I was getting married at 19 years old, he simply said, "Okay, let's plan a wedding."

The day before my now husband got into town for our wedding, my dad took me out to dinner and said, "Things are going to change, but I want to have this last dinner with you before it does."  I think about that dinner all the time.

Dad's are truly a special thing on this earth. I know that my dad is the biggest part of who I am today and I hope and pray everyday that I am half the parent that he was to me.

I love you daddy, love Lis

Okay now let's look and see some quotes that other people have to say about dads and their greatness.

"A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty."
~Author Unknown

"A father is always making his baby into a little woman. And when she is a woman he turns her back again."
~Enid Bagnold
"A father carries pictures where his money used to be."
~Author Unknown

"Old as she was, she still missed her daddy sometimes."
~Gloria Naylor
"There's something like a line of gold thread running through a man's words when he talks to his daughter, and gradually over the years it gets to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a cloth that feels like love itself. "
~John Gregory Brown, Decorations in a Ruined Cemetery, 1994

"There are three stages of a man's life: He believes in Santa Claus, he doesn't believe in Santa Claus, he is Santa Claus."              ~Author Unknown

"Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope."
 ~Bill Cosby

"Of all nature's gifts to the human race, what is sweeter to a man than his children?" - Cicero (106-43 BC)

"Dad - a son's first hero, a daughter's first love."
-Author Unknown

"By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right - he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong!" - Charles Wadsworth

"It doesn't matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was."
- Anne Sexton

"My father taught me to be independent and cocky and free thinking, but he could not stand it if I disagreed with him."      - Sara Maitland

"I have found the best way to give advice to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it."
-- Harry S Truman

"It is a wise father that knows his own child."
-- William Shakespeare

One night a father overheard his son pray: Dear God, Make me the kind of man my Daddy is. Later that night, the Father prayed, Dear God, Make me the kind of man my son wants me to be.                - Anonymous

I know that some of you out there play the role of both mom and dad, and I comend you for doing that! I have seen how a parent strives to be everything their child needs. So to you I say,  Happy Father's Day as well! For all of the wonderful fathers out there, thank you for your love and guidence.

Have a happy Sunday to you all!

The One Flaw in Women

Hello there! I received this poem as an e-mail and the few women that I passed it onto all wrote me back and said that it touched them in some way. I knew that I wanted to share it with even more women so I thought that this is the best place to do it.       **I do not know who wrote this so if anyone knows then please share the info with me so we can give credit where deserved.**     I hope it touches you like it did me and my friends.

The One Flaw in Women

By the time the Lord made woman,
He was into his sixth day of working overtime.
An angel appeared and said,
'Why are you spending so much time on this one?'
And the Lord answered, 'Have you seen my spec sheet on her?
She has to be completely washable, but not plastic,
have over 200 movable parts, all replaceable
and able to run on diet coke and leftovers,
have a lap that can hold four children at one time,
have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart
-and she will do everything
with only two hands.'

The angel was astounded at the requirements.
'Only two hands!? No way!
And that's just on the standard model?
That's too much work for one day..
Wait until tomorrow to finish.'

'But I won't, ' the Lord protested.
'I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart.
She already heals herself when she is sick
AND can work 18 hour days.'

The angel moved closer and touched the woman.'But you have made her so soft, Lord.'
'She is soft,' the Lord agreed,
'but I have also made her tough.
You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish.'

'Will she be able to think?', asked the angel.
The Lord replied,
'Not only will she be able to think,
she will be able to reason and negotiate.'

The angel then noticed something,
and reaching out, touched the woman's cheek.
'Oops, it looks like you have a leak in this model.
I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one.'

'That's not a leak,'
the Lord corrected,
'that's a tear!'
'What's the tear for?' the angel asked..

The Lord said, 'The tear is her way of expressing her joy,
her sorrow, her pain, her disappointment, her love,
her loneliness, her grief and her pride. '
The angel was impressed.
'You are a genius, Lord.
You thought of everything!
Woman is truly amazing.'

And she is!
Women have strengths that amaze men.
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness,
love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up to injustice.

They don't take 'no' for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.

They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about
a birth or a wedding.

Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss
can heal a broken heart.

Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.

They bring joy, hope and love.
They have compassion and ideals.
They give moral support to their family and friends.
Women have vital things to say and everything to give

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE TINY FLAW IN WOMEN,

IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

PLEASE pass this along to your women friends and relatives
to remind them just how amazing they are.

I hope that this touches you like it did me! I love this poem and hope that it will reach women and men who need to hear it.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Talking About...Channing Tatum

Good Morning and Happy Thursday to you all! This week I am talking about a person who I have watched from the first movie he was in. He knows how to dance and how to make us cry. I give you...

Channing Tatum

Born:     Channing Matthew Tatum
On:        April 26, 1980
In:         Cullman, Alabama
Height:  6' 1" ( 1.85 m)

He started his career modeling and staring in commercials.

In 2005 his landed his first big time role in the film Coach Carter. Tatum was in the movie with big actors and the biggest being the amazing Sam Jackson.

Tatum was in many movies after his role in Coach Cater. One of them included Step up which I believe is a big contributor to the career he has today. But we are here to focus on the movies that were books that he has brought to the big screen. So lets get started.

Tatum was in the H.G. Wells book to movie adaptation of The War of the Worlds in 2005, but he was uncredited in the film.

In 2006 Tatum played Young Antonio in the book to movie adaptation of A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints by Dito Montiel.

In 2009, we saw Tatum portray Pretty Boy Floyd in the film adaptation of Public Enemies by Bryan Burrough

Also in 2009 we got to see Tatum play Duke in the highly popular comic book movie G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

2010 brought us Tatum's role in Dear John based on the Nicholas Sparks novel.

This Year Tatum was starred opposite Rachel McAdams in the true life book to movie adaptation called, The Vow. The Vow is about a young woman who loses her memory after a horrible car crash. Her husband wants her back and tries to make her fall in love with him all over again.

This year Tatum also had his highly successful movie of 21 Jump Street hit the big screens and the movie Magic Mike which is based on Tatum's real life experience of stripping, oh yeah you heard me.

I have high hopes for this guy and I hope that he continues to bring more books to life for us in the future.

And now I give you...

Just for Fun

Happy Thursday!
